Scything Workshop
Chris Riley is an experienced scythesman and scythe trainer. His background is in nature reserve management and running groups of volunteers.
A modern continental scythe is surprisingly effective for mowing small meadows, verges, weeds, and even lawns.
Working in the meadows at Vallis Farm, Chris will guide you through optimal setup of a scythe, how to keep the blade sharp, and how to mow with an efficient movement. These are the three key factors in successful scything. Safety considerations will be emphasised, and cut resistant gloves will be provided. No other protective clothing will be required.
You should gain a good start in learning the skills of scything. This workshop is mainly for beginners, but improvers can also benefit.
All scythe equipment is provided, though you can bring your own equipment as well. New scythes are also available to purchase on the day. See www.pratensis.net/buy_scythes.html for more information and a guide to prices.
£80, includes refreshments.
