Vallis Farm is a home for learning and creativity, for exchanging skills and ideas, a place to grow. We are an evolving collective of highly experienced craftspeople, compassionate educators and committed stewards of the land.
THE STORY SO FAR
WELCOME to Vallis Farm: a haven for wildlife and community, just a skip and a hop from the centre of Frome. Among fruit trees and wildflowers, our little farm has something for everyone. Learn something new, exchange ideas, or sit for a while in nature. We host events and volunteer days, and our Shepherd’s Huts make a great off-grid getaway.
When we arrived in late 2020, the farm – once a family home and equestrian centre – was in need of some TLC. Long ago, it was a sprawling dairy farm (you can still see a dip in the ground where the cows came in).
Now, it’s our mission to make it somewhere for nature and people to thrive; where food can grow alongside native flora and fauna, not in competition with it.
A PLACE TO GROW
We minimise digging and avoid using chemicals or synthetic fertiliser, which helps us to restore natural cycles. Worms improve the soil and insects pollinate, and both are part of a wider food chain, which benefits biodiversity.
Our new Kitchen Garden was once the manège for the equestrian centre. It’s sand and aggregate base was perfect for horses and weeds, but not a lot else. So we built raised beds, and stacked old tree stumps left by a tree surgeon to create a habitat for small creatures. By late summer verbena, foxgloves and euphorbia will grow up around it.
Our planting is a happy mixture of culinary and medicinal herbs, vegetables, and nectar-rich flowers. Since we arrived, we’ve planted over 80 trees. In the forest garden, you’ll find plum, pear, cherry, apple, quince, amelanchier, and lime trees, which will soon be surrounded by edible shrubs like berries and rhubarb. Visitors can plant trees, harvest their own dinner, or just relax among the strawberries enjoying the scent of chamomile and rosemary.
